Music Video with Nothing But 45,000 Photo Shots
There's patience, and then there's the patience. Like shooting a 4:15 music video using nothing but the 45,000 images you captured with a Nikon D200 DSLR camera.
That's exactly what director Cesar Kuriyama did for the band Fat City Reprise.

Say goodbye to the computer mouse
"A startup named Mgestyk Technologies claims that they have an affordable solution for 'Minority Report'-like PC control. They have released a video in which they use hand gestures to play games like Halo and Guitar Hero, as well as perform 'multi-touch' interactions for applications like Google Earth. Engadget and Gizmodo discuss the potential of the technology but point out that the system has visible lag when used for gaming. Will camera-based interfaces ever meet the low-latency demands of gaming? For how much longer will we still be using keyboards, mice and joysticks?"

In a glade
This is a famous Ukrainian folk song, sung by Milla Jovovich in her Divine Comedy album.
Milla Jovovich was born in Kyiv (Kiev), Ukraine to Bogdanovitch Jovovich (father, Serbian doctor), and Galina Loginova Jovovich (mother, Russian actress). In 1981, Milla and her family left the Soviet Union and moved to London, England and then to Sacramento, California, ultimately settling in Los Angeles.

Fusion-Man
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, September 26, 2008 Yves "Fusion-man" Rossi has won his bet: the bird-man crossed the English channel on his reactive wing. He landed in Dover at 13:19 (London time, BST)
Press service, Yves Rossy
Madame, Monsieur,
Yves Rossy is a Swiss pilot, inventor and aviation enthusiast. He is both the first person to build and the first person successfully to fly a jet engine-powered wing strapped to the back. The flight occurred in November 2006 in Bex, lasting nearly six minutes. While work with jet packs to propel humans dates back as far as World War II, his is the first one to have wings.

Where the Hell is Matt?
14 months in the making, 42 countries, and a cast of thousands...
Matt is a 31-year-old deadbeat from Connecticut who used to think that all he ever wanted to do in life was make and play videogames. Matt achieved this goal pretty early and enjoyed it for a while, but eventually realized there might be other stuff he was missing out on. In February of 2003, he quit his job in Brisbane, Australia and used the money he'd saved to wander around Asia until it ran out. He made this site so he could keep his family and friends updated about where he is.
A few months into his trip, a travel buddy gave Matt an idea. They were standing around taking pictures in Hanoi, and his friend said "Hey, why don't you stand over there and do that dance. I'll record it." He was referring to a particular dance Matt does. It's actually the only dance Matt does. He does it badly. Anyway, this turned out to be a very good idea.

Прибралась в доме, подоила корову, вывела на луг;
разбудила детей, накормила, отвезла в школу;
наточила косу, пошла в чисто-поле, накосила травы;
уехала в офис, уволила идиотов, обналичила деньги;
прибежала домой, нарубила дров, приготовила обед, накормила детей, отправила отчет в налоговую;
побежала в поле, косила до темна;
час в салоне красоты;
в интернет, схватила со стола краюху хлеба, перекусила и довольная - спать;

Snake Game on a Building
Here is yet another clever idea and excellent engineering by Polish students from Krakow. It was implemented through a microprocessor that controls all the lights in the building, which was then programmed to play this marvelous game.
P.S. The only thing that still bothers me is how did they do red and yellow light?
P.P.S. In January I've been posting about a similar idea to play Tetris.

Vodka Microsoft
A sneak preview of my life in the frozen Microsoft...
Here in the frozen Microsoft, life is tough.
The code, the wizards...
But the biggest enemy is Google
In this wilderness
You can go crazy by yourself
It's hard not to give up
Not to let yourself become a victim of your own dogfooding
Every day the same bugs happen to me
All evenings look alike two M&Ms
The nights are getting coder
... and coder
And in every morning, the history repeats itself
And I know that nothing is going to change
in the frozen Microsoft
But I got used to it
My secret?

Lyapis Trubetskoy
“Lyapis Trubetskoy” (in Russian: "Ляпис Трубецкой") is one of the strangest bands of the post-soviet show business. In 1998-1999 their songs could be heard on any major radio station, their videos were shown on every top TV channel both in Russia and CIS countries. Until now their legendary hits like “Au”, “Ti kinula” (“You Gave Me Up”), “Zelenolazoye taksi” (“Green-eyed Taxi”), “V plat’ye belom” (“In A White Dress”) and “Yabloni” (“Apple-trees”) are still popular among all Russian karaoke singers. Isn’t it the obvious sign of public acknowledgement?

Ukrainian Love of 007
Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko has been cast as the female lead of James Bond (Daniel Craig) in the new 007 sequel "Quantum of Solace".
She previously appeared in Vincenzo Natali's five-minute contribution "Quartier de la Madeleine" to the European omnibus film "Paris, Je T'Aime" (2006) playing the creepy, unnamed vampire who enters into a blood-soaked love affair with a young American tourist played by Elijah Wood. Beside this, she appeared as Sofia in "Le Serpent" (2006), as Russian beauty Nika Boronina in "Hitman" (2007) and as Mina Harud in the indy surveillance-thriller "Tyranny" (2008). To recognize her achievements, Olga's native city Berdyansk is going to name a street in her honor.

Deep Sea Creatures
Many species of deep ocean fish have special adaptations to living in extremely high pressure, low light conditions. Some of them are black as night all over with light organs (called photophores) in strategic places on their bodies, including one on a long dorsal fin that serves as a lure for the fish it preys upon. Some don't have any pigment (color) at all - they're "see through", some have enlarged eyes, presumably for gathering as much light as possible where there is little or no light at all. The light organs create lights by using a chemical process called bioluminescence...

Why beautiful people have more daughters
Have you ever wondered why men on average are taller, more aggressive, more competitive and earn more than women do? And why death penalty would not stop them from committing a crime? Or why woman would rather prefer flowers and diamonds to a material gift of an equal value? How about this: why man likes porn and woman doesn't (unless everybody gets married at the end :-) Well, there is a perfect theoretic explanation to all these behavioral tendencies.
Why beautiful people have more daughters : from dating, shopping, and praying to going to war and becoming a billionaire : two evolutionary psychologists explain why we do what we do by Alan S. Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa answers all these and many other interesting questions:
Why do Men Like Blonde Bombshells (and Why do Women Want to Look Like Them)?
Why is Beauty not in the Eye of the Beholder or Skin-Deep?
Why is Prostitution the World's Oldest Profession, and Why is Pornography a Billion-Dollar Industry?
Why Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but not Lauren Bacall and Brad Pitt?
Why do Men and Women Perceive the Same Situation Differently?
Why are There Virtually No Polyandrous Societies?
Why (and How) are Contemporary Westerners Polygynous?
Why does Having Sons Reduce the Likelihood of Divorce?
Why are Diamonds a Girl's Best Friend?
Why might Handsome Men Make Bad Husbands?
Boy or Girl? What Influences the Sex of Your Child?
Why does the Baby Have Daddy's Eyes, but Not Mommy's?
Why are There So Many Deadbeat Dads but So Few Deadbeat Moms?
Why is Family More Important to Women than to Men?
Why do Girls of Divorced Parents Experience Puberty Earlier than Girls Whose Parents Remain Married?
Why are Almost All Violent Criminals Men?
What do Bill Gates and Paul McCartney Have in Common with Criminals?
Why does Marriage "Settle" Men Down?
Why do Some Men Beat Up their Wives and Girlfriends?
Why do Politicians Risk Everything by Having an Affair (but Only if They are Male)?
Why do Men Earn More Money and Attain Higher Status than Women?
Why are Most Neurosurgeons Male and Most Kindergarten Teachers Female?
Why is Sexual Harassment So Persistent?
Where does Religion Come from?
Why are Women More Religious than Men?
Why is Ethnic and Nationalist Conflict So Persistent throughout the World?
Why are Single Women More Likely to Travel Abroad -- and Why are Young Single Men More Likely to be Xenophobic?
The book is surely a fun read even though you'll find quite a few results and methods questionable. One of its biggest values is that it is a source of discussion topics that would be interesting to virtually any audience.
If you prefer listening to reading, the book is also available on an MP3 CD as audio book.
And if you got as interested in the book as I did, you may want to read a critique of some of the facts from the book.

Americans vs. Russians

Debunking third-world myths with the best stats you've ever seen
You've never seen data presented like this. With the drama and urgency of a sportscaster, Hans Rosling debunks myths about the so-called "developing world" using extraordinary animation software developed by his Gapminder Foundation. The Trendalyzer software (recently acquired by Google) turns complex global trends into lively animations, making decades of data pop. Asian countries, as colorful bubbles, float across the grid -- toward better national health and wealth. Animated bell curves representing national income distribution squish and flatten. In Rosling's hands, global trends -- life expectancy, child mortality, poverty rates -- become clear, intuitive and even playful.

An amazing short film about ex-president of Russia catching a taxi to get to Kremlin.
Here is the dialog:
[Mariachi music plays loud when Putin opens the door...]

01:29 Driver: Chu now da road?
01:30 Putin: Not very well, I'm from Saint Petersburgh

01:39 Driver: Escucha, you gimme 300 and we go
01:42 Putin: No, I'm not going for 300, I'm sorry

American History in a Food Fight
Food Fight by Stefan Nadelman is an abridged history of American-centric war, from World War II to present day, told through the foods of the countries in conflict. Watch as traditional comestibles slug it out for world domination in this chronologically re-enacted smorgasbord of aggression.

Stefan Nadelman FAQs:
- The food in this film was consumed either by Stefan or his dog after shooting. None of the cast went to waste.
- The software used was photoshop and after effects.
- The film took me 3 months to do.
- Although it seems like stop motion, most of it was stop motion created within After effects, using keyframe animation. Stefan is basically moving the food around within the the program, frame by frame, which is the same as traditional stop motion, only it's digital.

Newton Virus
In the beginning were harmless computer viruses. Viruses born out of the wit of early computer adopters, viruses whose sole purpose was to surprise and amuse. A non-destructive form of artificial life.
We wanted to revive this golden era, and went on to create our first computer virus. We chose to do it for mac as the platform is still a virgin territory ;-)
Spice up your colleagues' day with our Newton Virus, the first virus to introduce gravity to your laptop, causing the desktop icons to fall down as if subject to the gravitational pull from the real world.
Newton Virus comes on a USB key for manual infection. Simply plug the key into a computer and the virus will automatically copy itself on the hard drive.
The virus will then hit at random, but only once. It will not replicate itself, mail itself to your friends or destroy any of your files, but instead provides you with moments of blissful surprise and magic.

Ao mestre com Carinho
If you thought what I thought every time he started a new drawing, you need to see a doctor :-) A very funny speed drawing by Mauricio Ricardo under the cover of Os Seminovos...
P.S. "Ao mestre com Carinho" apparently means "To the master with Affection" whatever that one means :-)

Ah, L'Amour
"Ah, L'Amour", is a bitter film by Don Hertzfeldt. To be honest, I don't understand most of his cartoons, but that usually only prooves that the author is a really good artist: every time I see that people's oppinions are polarized on something - it means the artist did something really outstanding, distinct or cult. This episode is pretty funny though and even I could enjoy it :-)

How secure is your credit card?
Chip and PIN was supposed to help protect us all from card fraud. But Cambridge researchers, Steven Murdoch and Saar Drimer, have found a number of ways that the criminally-minded could crack it - and extract your account number and PIN and all the details needed to create a cloned card.

P.S. If you are a victim of a credit card fraud accused by your bank, show them this video!

Death of a Nation: Russia
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the West has purposefully ignored the devastation which resulted. The West merely shrugged it's shoulders or pulled faces in 2005 when Putin called it "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century."
A once great country is now nearing terminal collapse. By 2050 Russia may have lost 50% of its population. Male life expectancy has plummeted like no time in recorded human history (now 56).
In this chaos opportunism has reached new depths. Oligarchs stole billions of dollars of assets which under Soviet times had belonged to all people. These are like new tzars, embraced by church and state.
Violence and the rise of the far-right is turning Russian against Russian on the basis of ethnic origin.
Drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, abject depression flow from a people who once worked together for a better and brighter Communist future. In its place is emptiness.
"The rise in mortality is unprecedented in a developed country. Its as though the country is at war"
P.S. Film consists of six parts. At the end of the part, move mouse cursor over the video window to select other parts.

Nice remix of a soundtrack to famous soviet movie "Guest from the future". My best attempt at translating the name of the song "Прекрасное далеко" would probably be "Marvelous far"...

Nacked Girl Illusion
Here is a nice test of which side of your brain is more developed. If you see the girl rotating clockwise, right semi-sphere of your brain is more developed. If you see her rotating counterclockwise, you've got brain with more developed left semi-sphere. If you can force yourself to see her rotating in both directions, you've got a really high IQ.
P.S. The trick to see her rotating in the opposite direction to the one your brain is good at, is to look on something else on the page and see the girl with your side vision. Once your side vision picks the opposite direction rotation, focus on the girl entirely. Good luck!

Vagina Monologues
Apparently February 1 is also known as the V-Day - a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. I learned about it after I saw that many of the universities were staging a play with an intriguing and contoversial name "Vagina Monologues". Unless you are sensitive to hearing V-word 5 times in every sentense, you've got to see this masterpiece and better in real than on youtube if you get a chance...
In the most conservative university of the most conservative state, the show was sold out completely for both days. When I was walking from the parking lot to the show (late as usual), a woman stopped her car by and asked conspiratively if I am a student and if I know where a building with a strange name she couldn't remember is. She was obviously looking for MSC and I guasked her if she was going to Vagina monologues? She blushed, then smiled, and then said: "Yes, actually" :-)

Vote for Kyiv!
Dear friends and colleagues,
I am writing to each of you with the hope that you will join a group of us in Ukraine in voting for Kyiv to become one of the 22 cities of the world to be included in the new Monopoly World Edition game board. After much lobbying of Hasbro in Europe (ironically led by a Swiss gentleman living in Ukraine), Kyiv was included in the 68 city shortlist for voting - a major feat in and of itself.
Beginning today, you may log onto http://www.monopoly.com/ to cast your vote online. In fact, you may continue to do so each day until the cut-off of the contest on February 28, 2008. At the close of the online voting, the twenty cities that receive the most votes will become part of Monopoly history as the first cities selected to be on the World Edition game board. These cities will appear on the Monopoly board from highest rent property to lowest based upon the total number of votes received.
This is a significant development as this World Edition board game will be sold in over a hundred countries around the world and manufactured in 37 languages (including Ukrainian). This is a great (albeit symbolic) way to get Ukraine on the international map!
Please forward this e-mail to anyone that you feel would be interested in supporting this initiative. Should you have any questions about this contest, feel free to send me an e-mail at lbezo@hotmail.com.
Remember: You may vote online each day from January 22 to February 28. If you peruse the leading countries as of today (the start of the contest which opened approximately 8 hours ago), Ukraine is presently in 57th position out of 68 countries. Poor showings indeed...please help to do your online part in raising the country's profile.
Slava Ukrayini!

Are you cheating?
A guy orders flowers through 1-800-flowers for his mistress and asks not to send any information about this to his home or office. Months later 1-800-flowers sends him a “Thank you note”. His wife sees the note, calls the company and asks for proof of purchase. In return she gets a copy of the invoice...
She’s divorcing him right now, while he is suing 1-800-flowers for $ 1,000,000.

P.S. Don't use Internet when you cheat - big brother is watching you ;-)

Head Tracking
Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University.
